TOKYO | As predicted, the ruling Conservative LDP-NKP coalition was defeated after 50 years of power. Prime Minister Taro Aso ceded and resigned as the LDP leader. The Leftist party coalition,DPJ (Dem Party of Japan),Social Dems, and People’s New Party won, resulting in a new Prime Minister,Yukio Hatoyama. Aso’s loss was a result of a 5%unemployment rate,which is the highest in Japan’s history. PM Aso took office last year after his predecessor’s resignation. According to news reports, the DPJ-SDP-PNP Coalition may have taken about 318 seats (+194), while the LDP-NKP coalition lost 187 seats,resulting in only 140 seats.
