TAIPEI,Taiwan/Republic of China | Former President Chen Shui-Ban was sentenced to life in prison and fined NT$200 million (US$6.13 million) on charges of embezzlement, taking bribes, and money laundering, involving a total of US$15 million (NT$490 million) while in office from 2000 to 2008.Supporters of former President Chen Shui-Ban say the prosecution was politically motivated and point to unusual moves by the current government such as replacing judges who had granted Chen release on his own recognizance with judges who immediately ordered Chen jailed and isolated in mid-trial. Chen Shui-Ban is the first ROC president to receive a prison sentence.
